I mozziconi di sigaretta fanno parte dei rifiuti che si trovano più spesso nella natura. Durante i nostri Clean-Up, un terzo dei rifiuti raccolti sono mozziconi. A livello mondiale, sono 4,5 mila miliardi di mozziconi¹ che vengono gettati nell’ambiente. E, vista la loro piccola dimensione, possono essere dispersi per migliaia di chilometri dal vento e dai corsi d’acqua. Un mozzicone gettato su una montagna svizzera può quindi ritrovarsi in un oceano.

Diese Situation ist angesichts ihrer Toxizität besonders problematisch. Tatsächlich wird geschätzt, dass ein Zigarettenstummel etwa 5.000 chemische Verbindungen enthält, darunter mehr als 150 Substanzen², die als umwelttoxisch anerkannt sind. Dazu zählen unter anderem Arsen, Nikotin, polyzyklische aromatische Kohlenwasserstoffe (PAK) oder Schwermetalle. Zudem besteht der Zigarettenfilter hauptsächlich aus Celluloseacetat, einem synthetischen, schlecht biologisch abbaubaren Polymer³, das mehrere Jahre in der Natur verbleiben kann.

Diese Stoffe verschmutzen Böden und Gewässer. Die Filter zersetzen sich unter Lichteinwirkung und reichern sich in der Umwelt als Mikroplastik an, insbesondere in aquatischen Lebensräumen. Die giftigen Stoffe werden bei Kontakt mit Wasser in die Umwelt abgegeben. Ein einzelner Zigarettenstummel kann bis zu 1.000 Liter Wasser⁴ verunreinigen!

Questo inquinamento ha impatti negativi sulla biodiversità⁵, soprattutto per gli ecosistemi acquatici. Uno studio ha concluso che un mozzicone può uccidere la metà dei pesci di piccola taglia che vivono in 1 litro d’acqua⁶. Inoltre, una parte delle sostanze tossiche è bioaccumulabile e può ritrovarsi nella nostra alimentazione.

Allora, cosa fare? Anche se la soluzione migliore è non fumare affatto, ecco alcuni consigli per evitare che i mozziconi di sigaretta diventino una fonte di inquinamento:

• Getta i mozziconi solo nei cestini o nei posacenere predisposti a questo scopo nelle stazioni, presso gli impianti di risalita e nei ristoranti.
• Usa un posacenere portatile, come l’Ecobox proposto da Summit Foundation.
• Tieni i mozziconi con te finché non puoi smaltirli correttamente.

Insieme, agiamo per una montagna pulita e senza mozziconi.
