Characterization is a method developed by the «MerTerre» association to analyze the waste collected during Clean-Ups. It consists in quantifying volumes and weights, as well as identifying so-called «indicator» waste items according to a standardized nomenclature.

This protocol is part of the “Zéro Déchet Sauvage” (Zero Wild Litter) network, which makes it possible to harmonize collection data with other organizations conducting clean-ups and to make results comparable between different sites.

By structuring data from clean-ups, characterization turns Clean-Ups into a true environmental analysis tool. It provides a better understanding of the nature and origin of waste found in the mountains.

This information constitutes a solid foundation for the stakeholders concerned to develop targeted waste reduction actions and source prevention.
