PFAS IN THE SNOW

The study of PFAS in the snow is a student research project launched in 2025 in collaboration with the’EPFL. It aims to quantify the presence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in the ski resorts Swiss. These chemical compounds, used in wax products to improve glide, are released into the environment during the snowmelt. Persistent and toxic, they threaten the alpine ecosystems and the human health.

Despite the’ban of fluorinated waxes by the FIS in 2023, studies show a contamination still high. This project aims to assess the’state of pollution and provide a scientific tool to support new environmental regulations.

Beyond science, PFAS & Mountain seeks to raise awareness among local stakeholders to encourage sustainable practices and preserve the Alps and the winter activities.
